West Ridge, still called West Rogers Park by many longtime residents, is one of the larger neighborhoods on the Far North Side. Devon Avenue runs through it as a busy shopping street, and the residential blocks spread out around Warren Park and Indian Boundary Park.
The housing changes as you move west. The eastern blocks near Western and Ridge have 1920s brick bungalows and two-flats, while the streets west of California filled in later with mid-century brick homes, raised ranches, Georgians and low-rise apartment buildings.
That means two kinds of heating on the same street. Older bungalows often kept a hot-water boiler or switched to a furnace during a remodel; the post-war homes were built with forced air and ductwork, and many have central air that has already been replaced once.
