Water stains on the top-floor ceiling

In zoned homes, a stuck zone damper or a failed zone board can leave one floor too hot or cold while the others work fine.
Small cottages sometimes have furnaces squeezed into crawlspaces or low basements, which makes service access and venting harder on any replacement.
In a new home with attic equipment, check that the condensate pan has a working float switch and that the attic is reachable for service. Both save trouble later.
In an older home, ask whether the existing ducts can carry air conditioning before adding it. Ducts sized only for heat often need upgrades for AC to cool the upstairs.

In homes with an attic air handler, a clogged condensate drain is the usual cause. Turn the AC off and call. Cleaning the drain and adding a float switch prevent it from happening again.
Check whether each thermostat calls for heat or cooling and whether air comes out of that zone’s vents. If one zone does nothing, its damper or the zone control board is the likely cause.
