Garfield Ridge wraps around the north and east sides of Midway Airport on the Southwest Side. Its blocks are lined with brick bungalows from the 1920s and raised ranches, Georgians and Cape Cods built after World War II.
Because the neighborhood sits right beside the airport, many homes were part of the city’s Midway Residential Sound Insulation Program, which has insulated more than 10,000 homes around Midway and, where residents had relied on open windows to cool off, installed central air.
Those programs began decades ago, so a lot of the air conditioning they installed is now old. Replacing it, and sizing the new system for a house that is now much tighter, is one of the most common decisions here.
Raised ranches add their own comfort question: the lower level, partly below grade, usually runs cooler than the main floor in both seasons.
