Bronzeville was the center of Black life in Chicago for much of the 20th century, home to newspapers, banks, churches and the jazz and blues clubs of the Black Metropolis. Nine of its historic buildings, along with the Victory Monument, make up the Black Metropolis-Bronzeville District, designated a Chicago Landmark in 1998.

Its residential streets, especially along King Drive and Calumet Avenue, are lined with greystones and brick rowhouses from the late 1800s, many restored in recent decades.

Restored greystones often keep their boilers and radiators, with high-velocity or ductless cooling added. Others were converted to forced air during a gut rehab.

Multi-unit greystones split into condos commonly share one boiler, which makes zoning and clear responsibilities important.
